A rising kickboxing star has added another trophy to his cabinet.

Thomas Johnston, who is from High Harrington, represented his country and Workington gym Tapout Knockout in the Samonte Cup in Düsseldorf; a prestigious competition which drew more than 1,000 competitors from 18 countries.

The 13-year-old Keswick School pupil fought in the under-13s and over-55kgs category where he dominated the advanced division, beating fighters from all over Europe.

In the final he put in another inspired performance, beating a German fighter with an accomplished display.

Terri Johnston, Tom’s mum, said: “Thank you to everyone involved in Tom’s journey so far.

“It’s fantastic to see all the support he is getting from his coaches, team-mates, family, friends, school and the community.

“Thank you to the WKU England team, who were all very supportive of Tom and made us feel really welcome.

“Walking through the airport when arriving home on Sunday made me feel so proud.

“People were stopping him and asking him about his trophy.”

Tom was selected to represent England on the Germany tour after winning the WKU World Kickboxing Championships in Athens and the English title last year. He will travel to Cologne in April and Simmern in June as the tour continues.
