Police are warning people in Cumbria to be vigilant after a Carlisle man was targeted by online scammers.

The man, who is in his 70s, was contacted several times with false stories.

On one occasion, the man was told that he had a daughter he had never met, and a request was made for him to transfer money.

On another occasion he was approached online with a plea to help pay for someone to enter the UK.

He was also asked via the internet to buy a vehicle from a man he did not know.

The man was told by the offenders to destroy any receipts of the transactions made.

A Cumbria Police spokeswoman urged any further potential victims to come forward.

"If you feel you have been a victim of a scam similar to mentioned above or have any information regarding the incident, please contact the police on 101 quoting log 62 of 6th February 2019," she said.
