PLANS are under way for the biggest and brightest Daffodil Day in Cockermouth.

Traders, groups and schools will all be doing their bit to celebrate William Wordsworth and promote the town in the event run by the town's rotary club.

Lord and Lady Egremont, of Cockermouth Castle, have agreed to be patrons.

Rotarian Ray Day launched the event in 2016 - following the planting of more than 35,000 bulbs, he also organised one the following year. He has now handed over the reins to Brian Mitchelhill.

Before doing so he was delighted to have signed up Lord and Lady Egremont as patrons.

"They have been involved in and opened the previous two events and are very keen to be involved in things within the town," said Ray.

This year's Daffodil Day takes place on Saturday, April 6.

Town businesses will be getting everyone in the mood by decorating their windows.

A poetry competition is being run in schools, with a view to displaying the poems in shops and All Saints' Church, where lots will be going on.

Various local groups will be doing their bit, including rotary, the WI, chamber of trade and Wordsworth Trust.

"Most of the music groups in Cockermouth will be playing in the church at various times," said Brian.

"Wordsworth Trust will be doing walks from Wordsworth House, along past the brewery to the church.

"Daffodils will be sprayed on the ground to mark the route."

The event is run to boost the town.

"This is not for profit, we are trying to raise the profile of the town and get as many people in as possible to visit the sites and shops," said Brian.

"We want to show Cockermouth in a good light."

Chamber of trade chairman Andrew Marshall has put daffodil friezes along the length of his windows. He's hoping lots of other businesses will follow suit. They can be bought from Lifestyle Repairs on Station Street.

"It's always good to have lots of people working together to support something that's going on in town, it should be a great event for Cockermouth," he said.
