AN art group which vowed to carry on after the death of its founder is still going strong - almost five years on.

The Art Class at Denton Holme Community Centre was founded by the late David Mossop about 25 years ago.

Following his death in 2014 members decided they would continue in his memory and they have created a lasting legacy to their former tutor.

But the friendly group want to ensure it continues and, while their numbers are healthy, with up to 20 members some days, they would like to entice more people.

Bill Reading, of Morton, is the longest-standing member, having attended since the beginning.

"There was just half a dozen people when it started," said the 89-year-old. "I like the company and the camaraderie.

"I don't paint as much now as I used to but I used to paint very regularly. I mostly paint landscapes."

Marion Jones, of Lowry Hill, has been going for about 12 years and enjoys the sociable aspect as well as the motivation it gives her.

She said: "You don't do it at home. You don't feel as motivated and you probably get interrupted with the phone, whereas here, this is what you have come for and it is the two hours in the week which are yours."

Barbara Bell thinks new members will bring fresh ideas and said it doesn't matter if you can paint or not. The 70-year-old, who has been a member for 15 years, said: "It's just a nice group. It's almost like David is still here."

Mr Mossop, of Denton Holme, was involved with several art groups across the county, and is fondly remembered for his approach to teaching and his kind nature as well as his talent.

Peter Bye, 79, of Denton Holme, said: "We miss him. He was a tutor and used to do demonstrations as well. He was very, very good."

The Art Class runs every Monday during term time from 1pm to 3pm.

It costs £2 which covers the cost of the hall and tea, coffee and biscuits.

Members take their own materials and work on whatever project they would like.
