Eighty horses had to be moved to safety so fire crews could tackle a blaze just outside Carlisle
Three fire crews were called to the scene of a barn fire near Wreay.
The building was well alight when they arrived.
The alarm was raised at about 5pm, and firefighters were at the scene for over three hours.
Fire engines from Carlisle East, Penrith and Carlisle West all attended the scene, where they found a horse box alight in the barn.
The incident saw 80 horses moved to safety so crews could make the area safe.
A Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: " At this moment in time we're unsure what started the fire but a full investigation will be carried out."
Firefighters used compressed foam and breathing equipment while putting the fire out.
Nobody was hurt or needed to be rescued.
An inspection will be carried out at the premises to see if any further action is required.
