A thirteen-year-old girl has died after a three vehicle crash on a country road south of Carlisle.

Two air ambulances, two ambulances, police and firefighrers were called to the crossroads outside the Crown Inn, near Ivegill, at 2.20pm yesterday. The girl was confirmed to be dead at the scene, say police.

A 14-year-old girl was taken to The Cumberand Infirmary in Carlisle with minor injuries, while a 43-year-old woman, who was driving a Citroen car, was flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. Police this morning described her condition as stable.

A spokesman for the force said that the woman is from the local area, but did not specify where.

Also involved were a black Land Rover Defender, driven by a 45-year-old man from west Cumbria, who sustained minior injuries; and a Mercedes Sprinter van, driven bya  60-year-old man from Lancashire.

He was not injured.

"Specialist officers are supporting the family involved,"  added the police spokesman. He said the road was reopened at 8.30pm. Anybody who can help the police investigation of the tragedy should contact PC 2207 Quinn, calling him on the force's non-emergency number 101.

There were three vehicles involved - a car, a Landrover and a van. 

After the crash, casualties had to be cut from the wreckage.

In a statement yesterday, police said the crash happened at the crossroads near The Crown pub, Broadfield, on the road between Ivegill and Durdar, near Carlisle. All four roads approaching the crossroads were closed for several hours while specialist collision investigators worked at the scene.
