THE owner of Cockermouth Castle is throwing open his gates to support the town's annual festival.

Lord Egremont has offered use of the castle courtyard during this year's Cockermouth Live!

Chairman Bob Pritchard said: "Lord Egremont is keen to see the castle being used more by the public and has given us permission to use the courtyard as one of our venues.

"We are really delighted, it will be an added attraction."

It is planned to have Cockermouth Mechanics Band, Sing Owt and one other performer use the courtyard during the festival which runs from June 28 to 30.

Organisers are delighted to have signed up musical legend Kiki Dee to headline.

She will perform at the Kirkgate Centre with her musical partner, guitarist, composer and multi-instrumentalist Carmelo Luggeri.

Probably best known for duetting with Elton John on Don’t Go Breaking My Heart, Kiki Dee has had a musical career stretching back more than 50 years.

"I think it will be a very suitable sort of headline act, it's something a bit different. We are pleased we managed to get her," said Bob.

Organisers would like to hear from potential performers to share their talents in a host of town venues - from pubs and shops to cafes and churches. Last year was the biggest festival yet - with 500 performers.

"I think we will match that," said Bob.

"We have contacted all of last year's performers and most of them want to play a part again."

Bob would also like to hear from more volunteers, to boost their team of 20.

"We need a few more. They're absolutely crucial, we have a rolling programme so people are moving around all the time," said Bob.

"We need people that can meet and greet and tell people what's going on."

Tickets (£20) for Kiki Dee are on sale at the Kirkgate (01900 826448 or www.kirkgatearts.org).
