Traffic lights in place in the centre of a West Cumbrian village are due to be removed today - but there are more on the way.

The three-way temporary signals on Main Road, Seaton, have been in place as part of a £380,000 project to upgrade the gas supply network in Main Road and Milburn Croft.

The project began in November 2018 and Northern Gas Networks said it had been carefully planned with Cumbria County Council to minimise disruption.

Engineers have been at work in Main Road, Milburn Croft, Braeside and Princess Avenue.

The firm says that, over the coming weeks, work will progress to Kings Avenue and Coronation Avenue.

The project is part of the gas company's ongoing work to replace about 5km of metal gas pipes in the area with more durable plastic ones.

A spokesman said: "This will ensure the continued, safe and reliable supply of gas to customers in the area for years to come.

"It will be necessary to implement further temporary traffic management measures as work progresses.

"NGN will provide detailed updates, and will ensure advance notification signs for road users and alternative routes for pedestrians are in place whilst works are being carried out."

The project is expected to be complete by mid April.

Steven Miller, site manager for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We have been working closely with Cumbria County Council to carefully plan these works and will continue to do all we can to minimise disruption to customers.

“We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank everyone for their continued support as we work to complete this project as safely and quickly as possible.”
