A CARLISLE man has issued an appeal to reunite a photo of world class racing driver Jim Clark with its owner.

Brian Irwin, of Richardson Street Denton Holme came across the print when he was having a clear out recently.

He knows it belongs to a woman called Jean Porteous, who he worked with in dispatch at Kangol in the 1970s.

Brian, 77, was a former projectionist and amateur photographer and his friend had given it to him to copy because she didn't have the negative.

"I used to print my own stuff. I must have been printing them out for her," he said.

"She kept asking for it back. I just couldn't find the thing in my stuff.

"It came up just recently and I thought that picture keeps getting lost and mixed up.

"It would be nice to give her it back but I don't know if she has passed on or not.

"If her family are aware of it, it would be nice to give them it back but they might not be interested.

Jean came from Gretna and was one of the many workers who would come down on the bus to work at the city factory.

Brian thinks she might have been a couple of years older than him.

He recalled that Porteous was her married name but is unsure of what her maiden name was.

She had a keen interest in racing and Brian thinks this photo must have been important to her.

It features Scottish racing driver Jim Clark with another man. It was taken at the Aintree International '200' in 1962, when Clark won with Team Lotus, he would have been about 26 at the time.

Before his tragic death in Hockenheim, Germany, in 1968, when he was killed in a racing accident, Jim Clark has won two world Championships, in 1963 and 1965. He was just 32 when he died.

Brian also has a photograph of Jean and is urging anyone who knows of her to get in touch so he can finally give her back her photo.
