A SIGNPOSTING and support service which aims to help and improve the mental wellbeing of residents has been launched in Workington.

Moorclose Library launched Marra-time this week. Every Monday morning (9.30am to 11.30am)and Friday afternoon (1.30pm to 3.30pm) people will be able to pop into the library for support, advice, free use of the internet and phone and a cuppa.

A county council spokesman said: "We have 19 volunteers trained in suicide awareness, mental health, listening skills, confidentiality, communication and with knowledge of what’s on and available locally.

"Many of them are from local employers who have allowed them time to do their training and to offer a couple of hours each week to support this programme for people who may need a bit of help and support."

The confidential service offers advice and support on: health and wellbeing; benefits; housing; family concerns; employment; bereavement and self confidence.

Community development officer Heather Nixon was at the launch event.

"It went very well, a number of services attended including: Castles and Coast and Westfield Housing Associations, the Rotary club, Allerdale Borough Council and the fire service," she said.

"People were really positive about the service, a lot of the agencies said they would make their customers and clients aware of it."

The idea for the service came from community services officer Sheryl McKeating, who had been inspired by Hug a Mug, a similar model in Maryport.

"Moorclose doesn't have a lot of facilities. Many people do not have transport and cannot access services in town," said Mrs Nixon.

"We thought this would be a good place to launch. People can just drop in, have a cup of tea and a chat. if they're struggling with anything we have lots of information and can help them access services."

The service relies on volunteers. If you can help, contact Sheryl.McKeating@cumbria.gov.uk or ring 07825 340615.
