Highways engineers are assessing traffic lights on the A595 after days of traffic disruption.

Cumbria County Council said it had received a high volume of calls about two sets of permanent pedestrian traffic signals at Egremont and Bigrigg.

Problems with the lights are understood to have been causing extra delays on an already busy road which carries a lot of Sellafield traffic.

A spokesman for Highways England, which is responsible for maintaining the trunk road, said engineers spent 40 minutes on site yesterday and did not come across any issues.

He added that engineers would be back on site today to open the controls and take a closer look.

The spokesman said: "We suspect there may well be an issue with the very low temperatures we’ve been experiencing over the last few days but that will be checked as well."

The units, he said, were fitted with heaters.
