Cumbria was gripped by bitterly cold weather overnight as temperatures dipped to as low as -5.3 degrees. 

Snow and ice caused traffic problems for motorists, with the M6 down to two lanes between junctions 39 and 37.

The freezing temperatures are continuing to cause problems and the following roads have been closed or are reported as being hazardous:

  • Newlands Pass, Braithwaite - Road closed due to snow
  • A591, Thirlmere - Hazardous driving conditions due to snow on the southbound carriageway from Back Lane (Thirlmere) to Stock Lane (Grasmere)
  • A591 Windermere - Hazardous driving conditions due to snow both ways between High Street (Windermere) to A590 (Brettargh Holt Roundabout, Sedgwick)
  • A592, Hartsop - Hazardous driving conditions due to snow between Townhead Brow and Road End
  • A595, Silecroft - Hazardous driving conditions due to snow both ways between A5093 (Silecroft) and A5092 (Grizebeck)
  • A595, Dalton-In-Furness - Hazardous driving conditions due to ice both ways between A590 (Elliscales Roundabout, Dalton-In-Furness) to Sun Street (Askam In Furness)
  • A6, Shap - Hazardous driving conditions due to snow on A6 between Shap and Kendal
  • Birker Fell, Ulpha - Birker Fell both ways closed due to snow between Ulpha Post Office (Ulpha) and Muncaster Head Farm (Holmrook)
  • Cold Fell Road, Wilton - Road closed due to snow
  • Corney Fell Road, Corney - Road closed due to snow 
  • Hardknott Pass, Boot - Road closed due to snow between Wrynose Pass and Austhwaite Brow
  • Honister Pass, Buttermere - Road closed due to snow between the Seathwaite turn-off and the Keswick turn-off
  • Jaktrees Road, Cleator Moor - Road closed due to snow between B5295 High Street (Cleator Moor) and Ainfield Cycle Centre (Cleator)
  • Newlands Pass, Braithwaite - Road closed due to snow  

Temperatures fell to well below freezing overnight, with the Met Office reporting the following lows:

  • Carlisle, Workington and Whitehaven temperatures fell to -4.3 degrees at 8am this morning 
  • Shap temperatures hit a low of -5.3 degrees at the same time
  • Spadeadam battled with temperatures of -4.2 degrees at 6am this morning 
  • Brough temperatures were as low as -5 degrees at 9am this morning 
  • Great Dun Fell recorded temperatures of -5.2 degrees at 8am this morning 
  • Keswick saw a warmer low temperature of -2.5 degrees at 9am
  • St. Bees Head temperatures were -0.5 degrees at their coldest, which was recorded at 7am this morning
