More than 1,000 motorists in Cumbria were tested for drink-driving over the festive period.

In total Cumbria Police tested 1,163 drivers for alcohol last month which is almost 250 more people than the previous year.

Despite more drivers being tested, only 47 either tested positive or refused to comply. This is down on by 10 on the previous year's figures, say police.

Even though there was a fall in drivers caught drink-driving, the number of motorists who failed drugs test rose from 19 in December 2017 to 22 last month.

Inspector Steve Minnikin, of Cumbria Constabulary’s Mobile Support Group, said: “Every time such as driver is caught, potentially, you are looking at a serious or potentially fatal collision avoided.”
