Keswick School pupils got a taste of life at one Oxford University thanks to a visit from a group of student rowers.

The sporting students from Magdalene College, Oxford, visited the school during winter training on Derwentwater.

As a thank-you to the school for providing access to rowing machines and gym facilities, the five undergraduates spoke to year 11 and 12 pupils about their experiences, motivations and the Oxbridge application process.

Keswick School prides itself on the level of support given to students applying to university as well as a tradition of preparing those wishing to go to the top institutions such as Oxford and Cambridge.

Its sixth form has been rated outstanding by Ofsted, and the most recent inspection recognised that its sixth formers were particularly well prepared for future employment and higher education.

The rowers' visit came as the school's head girl, Laura Wilson, received an offer to study English and French at Christ Church College, Oxford.

She said: “It didn’t occur to me to consider studying A-levels anywhere other than at Keswick School.

“From my first day, I have constantly benefited from not only the high standard of teaching and academic excellence, but also the rich sense of community prevalent among students and staff.

"Keswick sixth form is like a family, employing a nurturing yet firm approach to ensure the personal and academic success of all its members.

"Especially in sixth form, you have the opportunity to build personal relationships with teachers. Their evident passion and dedication have inspired and challenged me to strive for the best.

"Keswick School is a place where dreams truly can be realised.”

The school will hold an open evening tomorrow, January 23, from 6.30pm for prospective sixth formers who are currently in year 11.
