MORE than 100 teams have battled it out to be named Carlisle's best quiz brains.
The annual Sands Centre quiz returned on Sunday night for its 26th outing, with an extra 21 teams of four out in force compared to last year.
Similar to previous years, the format remained the same, with the first round testing the participants with a number of film clips, before then testing the audience's knowledge of news from 2018.
The third round, reminiscent of the TV show Blockbuster, tested people in a puzzle game, while, split into two, the fourth round asked the teams to name logos featured on a screen.
The next round tested music knowledge, with the anagram round following that.
Participants needed a first letter of people's surnames to form a word.
The evening was rounded off with a sport round, a celebrity faces round, and an album cover round.
In the final round, teams were given a helping hand, with a song from the album played in the background.
Quiz master Geoff Haugh, who has presented the event every year since it started in 1993, keeps a secret file of questions locked away all year.
He told the News & Star: "It was another brilliant event, with a total of 101 teams.
"There were no problems, and no arguments, and the quiz went smoothly.
"Entries opened in late December, and we stopped them last Wednesday, earlier than usual, due to high demand."
Geoff added his planning for the quiz, and inspiration for questions, is collected at various points over the year.
"A day after the quiz, I start planning all over again, and get inspiration for questions from all sorts of places, from watching the news on TV, to reading stories in the paper.
"I do plan to make a few changes next year, to keep the players on their toes."
The winners of this year's quiz were the Fantastic Four, led by team captain Ross Kerr leading by 10 points with a total of 253.
In second place, were If We Don't Win This Year Then We Are Voting For Qu'Exit!, with 243 points, led by David Strong.
Finishing in third place was Alan Elliot's team, Blue Passport White Elephant, with a total of 242.
Assistant quizmaster Martin Horne said: “We are delighted at the continued success of our annual team quiz – with an increase of over 20 teams from last year's event.
"We look forward to the 2020 quiz already, with question preparations beginning almost right away.”
Tickets were priced at £28 per team, for what is one of the most revered quizzes in the county.
Some of the questions from the quiz included:
1) England’s Harry Kane won the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup. How many goals did he score? Answer: 6
2) What TSBS is a TV programme which featured Melvyn Bragg? Answer: The South Bank Show
3) What pop song did Theresa May shimmy onto the stage too at the Conservative party conference in Birmingham in October 2018? Answer: Dancing Queen
