A West Cumbrian primary school is celebrating the successful launch of a new playgroup.

Eaglesfield Paddle Primary Academy launched the weekly sessions for preschoolers in partnership with the National Childbirth Trust (NCT).

The playgroup was set up in response to requests from the local community and the first session attracted about 40 families.

Sessions with be held every Friday during term time in the school hall from 9.30am to 11am.

They are run by members of the school’s early years team, supported by parent volunteers and NCT representatives.

Parents, grandparents and childminders can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee while their babies and toddlers play in a structured environment.

There are toys and games, art and craft activities, singing, dancing, stories and rhyme time.

It is also an opportunity for children to get used to the school in preparation for joining the nursery or reception.

Claire Raven, admin and support manager, has led the project. She said; “Being a new parent can be a really daunting and isolating experience and through the establishment of this regular playgroup we hope to be able to introduce an opportunity for new parents to establish a support network within the school, the NCT and the wider Paddle community.”
