New details have emerged following the death of a man at a Cumbrian quarry.

It happened yesterday morning at Hardendale Quarry, in Shap.

A 63-year-old was fatally injured after a shotgun, in his possession, was discharged. He has not yet been named.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has confirmed is now carrying out an independent investigation into the way the incident was handled.

It has also revealed new details about what happened at the quarry.

An IOPC statement said: "According to the information we have at this time, Cumbria Constabulary received a call concerning the welfare of a 63 year-old man, on Thursday evening.

"The man, who was in possession of a shotgun, was found by a search team in the early hours of the morning in a woodland area near to the quarry.

"We understand that police negotiators tried to resolve the situation, but sadly at around 11am the man died at the scene from injuries that were self-inflicted.

"We were made aware of the incident a short time after the man’s death and attended the scene and post incident procedures to gather evidence including the accounts of the officers who attended.

"We have retrieved body-worn footage of the incident and can confirm that a shotgun was recovered at the scene."

Amanda Rowe, regional director, added: “First and foremost I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the man who sadly died.

"We also appreciate that this is a deeply distressing incident for all those officers who witnessed this tragic incident.

“Our role is to independently look at the response of the police following the call concerning the man’s welfare through to the incident that took place at Hardendale Quarry.

"We will be in contact with the family at the soonest opportunity to explain our role, and will ensure our investigation is carried out thoroughly and sensitively.”

Police said the man's family are being supported by officers.

The Coroner has also been informed.

Officers have also sought to reassure the wider public that there was no perceived risk to them during this incident.

Cumbria police said that the immediate referral to the IOPC was in line with normal procedures.
