An adventure trail hopes to educate youngsters with the help of an app.

The educational trail opened at Westlakes Science Park near Moor Row on Friday aims to provide a curriculum-focused destination for local schools at Key Stage levels two and three.

It features knowledge boards on topics from photography to solar energy as well as a specialised app with a view to improving understanding of how STEAM subjects are part of our daily lives and how they are represented in the organisations on Westlakes Science Park.

STEAM subjects are science, technology, engineering, art and maths.

School visits will have use of a suite of iPads with the app preloaded but members of the public can also download it on their own devices to enjoy the trail.

Valley Primary School pupils were the first youngsters to try out the trail, taking to the trail on the opening day.

Michael Pemberton, CEO of BEC, who are the owners and operators of the science park, said: “We have fantastic surroundings here at Westlakes and have always been keen to make more of the paths and trails in the grounds with art installations.”

It was developed with the support of the University of Manchester’s Dalton Cumbrian Facility, University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), Ellen Wildig of Jacobs and Luke Richardson of Primary Business Partnership.

The trail is also intended to boost visibility for employers on Westlakes to future employees and encourage more young people into STEAM activities and has been supported significantly by Sellafield Ltd.

Stuart McCourt, who is part of Sellafield Ltd’s social impact team, added: “We wanted to help create a unique and inspiring asset for primary school students which complements their school work by giving their teachers a different environment to reinforce their curriculum learning through real world examples.”
