THE M6 northbound has reopened after a 'serious multi-vehicle' crash.

Police warned drivers to avoid the northbound motorway between junction 35 near Carnforth and junction 36 near Kendal after the crash, which occured at about 3pm.

Emergency services, including two helicopters from the North West Air Ambulance and North West Motorway Police, were on the scene.

A spokeswoman from North West Air Ambulance told the News & Star: "Two helicopters were called out at 2.54pm, and one person has been airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital."

The road heading north was closed for over six hours for investigation work and recovery.

The southbound carriageway was also blocked due to a separate crash between junction 35 and 34 at about 3pm, and reopened an hour later, according to Highways England.

Motorists were urged to allow extra time for their journey.
