Traffic police are cracking down on motorists making an illegal right turns off the A595 near Carlisle.

Complaints have been made to Cumbria Police about drivers turning right at the junction at Cardewlees, outside the filling station.

In a meeting held by the Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant at the Civic Centre in Carlisle the issue of vehicles continuing to make a right turn, despite signage warning them they can't, was brought up.

In a bid to stop the activity, police will now be carrying out regular patrols of the area.

PCSO Graham Kirkpatrick has been carrying out observations in response to the complaints and multiple advisory letters have been sent to those offenders that have been turning right at the junction.

PCSO Graham Kirkpatrick said: “We are looking to educate offenders and understand the issue so we can look at ways we can solve it.

“We urge the public to follow and read signs, those that aren’t are putting other drivers on our roads at risk. “
