An event aimed at those thinking of a career in nursing takes place this weekend in Carlisle.

The University of Cumbria's Fusehill Street is hosting a dedicated nursing open day on Saturday, starting at 11am.

It is one of only a few universities offering undergraduate degree courses in all four disciplines of nursing – adult, children’s, mental health and learning disabilities.

The courses are also approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

The University of Cumbria works closely with local health trusts, including Cumbria Partnership NHS Trust and North Cumbria University Hospitals Trust, which offer placements and future employment opportunities.

Upon graduating, students are eligible to join the NMC Register.

Dr Louise Nelson, the university’s head of nursing, health and professional practice, said the university offers small class sizes, taught by highly experienced teachers.

It also offers help with financial issues, childcare, placements and travel.

She urged anyone thinking of a career change to come along to the event and find out more.

“You will make a difference every single day, in every single way, to patients, carers and the wider community," she said.

“The next generation of nurses can look to find their place with us here at the University of Cumbria. Our open days offer people the chance to find out more about what the courses entail, meet staff and tutors, tour our facilities and discover more about the university and what it offers.”
