RAIL passengers are reminded of further strike action today which will see services reduced in Cumbria.

The RMT members are striking every Saturday this month as a bitter dispute with Northern over guards on trains.

Services between Carlisle and Newcastle, along the Cumbrian coast and between Carlisle and Settle, will be limited with few running after 5pm. Those Northern services that do run, and other operators’ services, are expected to be extremely busy.

Managing director David Brown said: “We expect all of our service on Saturdays in January to be extremely busy and are calling on our customers to plan their travel carefully for the coming weekend, check the new timetables well in advance, and make sure they do not rely on the last trains home.”

The rail company recently called on the RMT to suspend its long-running course of industrial action and accept an independent ACAS inquiry.

It highlighted how the Department for Transport and Transport for the North publicly confirmed that a second person – in addition to the driver – would be retained on Northern services.
