A Carlisle man was rushed to hospital with "serious" injuries after a hit-and-run incident in the city.
The collision, between a Ford Mondeo car and the pedestrian, happened about 4.50am on Boxing Day.
Police say it happened on Ferguson Road, Longsowerby.
A force spokesman said: "A man in his 20s from Carlisle was knocked down by a car and subsequently taken to CIC where he remains in a stable condition having suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries."
Officers are appealing for information as they try to identify the driver.
The blue Mondeo was recovered later that morning near to the scene.
"Officers are continuing their efforts to trace the driver of the Mondeo and would like to hear from anyone with information which could assist," the spokesman added.
