All train services between Carlisle and Barrow-in-Furness along the Cumbrian coastal line have reopened after the line ground to a halt this morning.

The problems had been caused by a fault with the signalling system between the two locations, but the issue has now been addressed.

The line, which runs from Carlisle through west Cumbria and on to Barrow may still be affected by delays of up to 45 minutes, according to Northern Rail.

A Northern spokesperson added that services may be revised today in light of the earlier disruption.

The spokesperson added:

"As trains return to normal, delays will still occur.

"Listen for further announcements."

Passengers on Northern Rail services delayed by 15 minutes or more can claim compensation from the company.

The franchise operator advises passengers to retain tickets after their journey if this is the case, and to visit northernrailway.co.uk/delayrepay to submit a compensation claim.
