A knife-carrying Carlisle man who acted "like a lunatic" at a funeral wake has been jailed for 18 months.

Violence flared at the city's Beehive pub, Warwick Road, on the afternoon of October 26 at a gathering following the funeral of Brian Morris' partner's mother.

Morris, 26, left the wake but returned upon learning trouble was brewing between his family and a man. CCTV footage captured him approaching the pub "at pace" and carrying a knife.

Inside, Morris was "bouncing about" with the blade in hand, and heard saying: "Where he is? I'm going to kill him."

Morris left but returned again, when the knife was seen through an open car window. A peacemaker trying to prevent trouble involving others told police he thought Morris was "trying to stab" him and how he "had to step back".

Carlisle Crown Court heard staff locked doors to keep trouble outside, while people with young children fled the premises and onlookers were left "shocked and scared".

Morris admitted affray and threatening another with intent with a bladed article in light of what his own barrister called "outrageous and unacceptable behaviour".

Morris, of Dowbeck Road, Carlisle, was jailed and must serve a year's driving ban upon release.

"There were small children in the public house who no doubt would have been upset and distressed by your disgraceful behaviour," said Judge James Adkin, who spoke of Morris "acting like a lunatic and waving a knife around."
