North Lakes Foodbank is helping local people make their money go further thanks to a £5,000 donation from Asda.

The money from the supermarket's Fight Hunger Create Change programme is being used to provide food budgeting tips and recipe ideas.

It will enable the foodbank, which is part of the Trussell Trust, to give out A4 menu card with every food parcel, explaining what ingredients have been handed over, menu ideas and cookery tips, as well as advice on food budgeting and debt management.

Adrian Cozens, project manager at North Lake Foodbank, said: "We received the £5,000 funding two weeks ago, and we were deliriously happy to receive it. It's marvellous to have Asda's help.

"It will really help us educate people and allow them to make the money they do have go further.”

The aim of the new menu cards is to help people to get the most out of the foodbank service by showing them how to save money and get full use out of every ingredient.

The foodbank has distribution centres in Cockermouth, Workington, Maryport, Whitehaven, Egremont and Wigton and provides emergency food parcels and support to people in need.

Asda at Dunmail Park in Workington has a permanent collection point set up for the foodbank.

Kevin Hunt, the store's community colleague, said: "Our customers are very generous with the food they donate, and we appreciate all donations, small or large.

"Both myself and Adrian are quite new to our roles so it was great to meet him and find out other ways we can help out moving forward, on top of the Fight Hunger funding they've just received."
