A number of vehicles were left abandoned on the side of the A66 as drivers struggled with the impact of Storm Deidre.

Posts on social media showed one car on its roof on the trans-Pennine route - closed from Penrith at the peak of the problems - after wild conditions took hold yesterday afternoon.

Drivers across Cumbria were urged not to use any roads that rose above 200 metres as high winds and freezing rain combined to create treacherous conditions.

Police took action with road closures and speed restrictions following a number of collisions.

The M6 had a speed restriction of 30mph in place between J42 to J38, in both directions, following crashes along the road.

Yesterday, the A66 between Kemplay Roundabout at Penrith and Brough was closed for several hours after reports of accidents.

The stretch between Brough and Bowes remained closed this morning.

Cumbria police said there were no serious injuries as a result of the collisions, but no further details have been released.

Today however, will seen a change in the weather, and the Met Office have reported it will still be cold but, dry with light winds and even a little sun.
