A learner driver who led police on a 100mph chase while over the drink-drive limit has avoided jail.

Ian Breckenridge, 36, was told: “You put the public at risk and put the police to a lot of trouble … it certainly deserves a prison sentence.”

However Sheriff George Jamieson, sitting at Dumfries Sheriff Court, said he would impose a direct alternative to a prison sentence which means if there is any breach it could result in custody.

He made Breckenridge, of Inglenook Caravan Park, Lamplugh, Cockermouth, the subject of a community payback order with conditions he be under supervision for 12 months and carry out 260 hours’ unpaid work.

Judge Jamieson also banned him from driving for 19 months and ordered the forfeiture of his car, worth up to £1,000.

Breckenridge, who had been in the Castle Douglas area visiting an ex-partner, admitted four charges involving driving dangerously last month while more than five times the Scottish drink limit.

He also admitted driving without L plates at speeds of up to 100mph in a 60mph limit, and 70mph on 30mph roads, as well as failing to observe a road closure and driving through traffic cones and amber flashing lights.

The court was told: “The chase began when police were called about the erratic behaviour of the driver.

“They traced the vehicle to Castle Douglas and as they drew up alongside it, it shot off and managed to get another car between himself and the police.

“He stopped at one stage and the police car drew up alongside him – but he reversed and drove off again before eventually being stopped.”

Solicitor Roger Colledge said Breckenridge had been involved in a disagreement and had gone off to “let it cool” and started drinking.

He added: “Much of what happened is rather hazy but he appreciates it is a very serious matter. Reports show there is little risk of reoffending.”
