POLICE are continuing to clampdown on dangerous motorists - after revealing three people were caught drink-driving in one night.

On Saturday evening, police were called at 9.20am to a crash involving a Volkswagen on Crown Street, Carlisle.

There were no injuries in the incident.

A 46-year-old woman from Carlisle was arrested for driving over the prescribed limit with no insurance.

Officers later received another call at 10.30pm to a report of criminal damage in the area of Etterby, Carlisle.

A 59-year-old man was arrested for driving over the prescribed limit and criminal damage.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, police were called at 12.20am to another crash in the area of Brookside, Carlisle, involving a Peugeot 207.

A 32-year-old man from Carlisle escaped injury and was arrested for driving over the prescribed limit.

Elsewhere on Saturday night, a 26-year-old from Hexham was arrested for drug-driving after police stopped a vehicle on Tree Road, Brampton.

Inspector Steve Minnikin told the News & Star: “Our message is simply do not drink-drive and do not drug-drive.

“There’s no excuse.

"Simply taking the time to plan ahead – arrange lifts or a taxi - will mean you are never tempted to get behind the wheel whilst impaired.

“The consequences of getting behind the wheel whilst unfit to do so could be fatal.

"Drivers lucky enough to be arrested before causing a collision also face losing their license and, potentially their livelihood.

“Our officers are now better equipped than ever before to catch anyone who is unfit to drive through drugs – be they illegal substances or prescription drugs which impair the ability to drive.”

The crack down on the county's roads follows a campaign supported by the force to combat driving under the influence in the run up to Christmas.

Earlier this month, Cumbria Road Safety Partnership announced their support for a national campaign during December aimed at ridding the roads of those who abuse drugs and alcohol before getting behind the wheel.

The partnership is made up of agencies – including Cumbria Constabulary - who work to make Cumbria’s roads safer for all users.
