SNOW fell and fireworks lit up the sky as the countdown to Christmas kicked off in Egremont.

Organisers pulled out all the stops to make sure this year’s Winter Wonderland event – which will be the last due to lack of funding – was one to remember. A record 14,000 people packed into the town to enjoy all that was on offer including a stunning firework display, an animatronic snow lion and queen, and real reindeer.

There was also a Santa’s grotto, fairground rides and a whole range of entertainment on stage including London Gospel Choir; Mokyfit and Orgill school choir.

The event is organised by the six members of the Egremont Amenity Committee.

Member Elaine Woodburn said: “We asked people to come out and support us because it was going to be the last year and we couldn’t have asked for anything better.

“We wanted to go out with a bang and we certainly did. I’m exceptionlly proud to be from Egremont and part of the community. It has been a brilliant family event.” Miss Woodburn said it couldn’t have been pulled off without all of the volunteers and sponsors.

There was a street market with dozens of stalls including tombolas, mulled wine and festive crafts.

Paul Zannachi, of Ennerdale Brewery which had a stall, said they look forward to the event each year as it is always a huge success. “Egremont is the busiest for us every year and the other Christmas fayres should take example,” he said. “It’s great for small and medium businesses in the community.”
