A UN official has visited Cumbria for high-level talks about improving health and wellbeing.

Roland Schatz is senior advisor to the United Nations director general in Geneva, Michael Moller.

He is also the founder of the UNGSII Foundation, which set out sustainable development goals (SDGs) to be adopted worldwide.

This work comes with significant investment - worth trillions globally.

Mr Schatz is working closely with Carlisle's Gareth Presch, who founded the World Health Innovation Summit (WHIS).

He was invited to Cumbria to meet local leaders and discuss how health and wellbeing can be improved locally.

This could potentially see a SDG hub established in the county.

Mr Schatz, who arrived in Carlisle on wednesday, said he believes Cumbria has the people and attitude to make it happen.

"I was delighted to come to Cumbria to discuss the SDGs, and the prospect of establishing a hub on good health and wellbeing is exciting," he said.

"Every year an estimated three trillion pounds will be spent in the UK, Europe and the other continents ensuring the global goals become a reality by 2030.

"According to Ernst & Young, it is not a question of enough funding, nor is it about solutions, but rather about working together with like-minded people.

"What I’ve seen in Cumbria is that can do attitude that sees us all working together."

He added: "I’ve been inspired by the leaders in Cumbria that I’ve met who are ready to share the vision to deliver the SDGs, and it’s an experience that I will take back to my colleagues in Vienna, Geneva and New York.”
