A BMW driver was clocked travelling at 140mph on the M6 near Penrith.
Police stopped the vehicle near the town after it had travelled from the Tebay direction.
The car was pulled over by officers from Cumbria Police's mobile support group yesterday at 1.30pm.
Officers were initially called to a report of dangerous driving.
A force spokeswoman said: "The incident is under investigation."
The driver is believed to be a 36-year old man from Whitehaven.
