A NEW BAR bringing music from the 80s and 90s is coming to Workington.

The Junction is due open next Friday in the former Yankees Bar on Washington Street.

It's the brainchild of Lloyd Burnie and his daughter Christina, who already run the soul and motown Soul Suite on Market Place.

Lloyd, who was a taxi driver before he opened the Market Place venue last year, said: "Soul Suite is bouncing and we decided to open another bar on the back of that success. In the old Yankees, we've been doing some work to the bar, we took the stage out and we brightened it up a bit.

"We'll have music from the 70s right through to the naughties, I just think there's a lack of this in the town. When I opened Soul Suite people were telling me it wouldn't work, but it really took off and it's just getting stronger and stronger, people travel to come to it and we get crowds week in week out."

Yankees shut earlier this year, after more than 30 years in business. It opened in 1986 after Glenys and Brian Walker converted the former terraced house and named it after Brian's grandfather, who was known as Yankee Walker.

This is the second time Lloyd and Christina resurrect a historic town-centre pub. Soul Suite opened less than 12 months ago in the former Commercial Inn, one of Workington's oldest pubs at the time.

When Soul Suite opened, the owners said they wanted to offer something for a mature audience.

Lloyd said: "The Junction is also aimed at an older crowd, because the people who will want to listen to 90s music aren't the teenagers, but it will be a younger crowd than Soul Suite. When we put out on Facebook that we were opening the new bar, it went mental, we had thousands of views and lots of comments."

The Junction will host DJs as well as live music a few times per month.

It will open on Friday, November 23 at 6pm.
