THE sister of a well-known Harraby man has been praised by Eden Valley Hospice after raising more than £1,000 in his memory.

Grant Moffat was only 48 when he died of cancer in June this year.

His sister Sandra Moffat and friend Tracey Walker held a charity night in Grant’s memory on Saturday November 3, raising a grand total of £1,100.

The night was held at The Railway Club in Harraby. The club is run by Tracey, who grew up with Grant and Sandra in Old Harraby.

About 130 people came to the event. Donations for the night flooded in from shops across Harraby, where Grant was well-known for his friendly and helpful personality.

Sandra was by his side throughout his 10 month battle with the disease, moving in with Grant as soon as he was diagnosed.

“I put my life on hold for him. I didn’t go back to my house and I stopped with him for the full 10 months,” said Sandra, 54.

“I said ‘I’m not leaving you.’”

“He had a heart of gold,” Sandra continued.

“He was loved by so many people, and he’d help anybody.”

After Grant was diagnosed with cancer, he devoted himself to religion and charities.

“For the full 10 months he just devoted himself to charities,” Sandra said.

Grant could also be seen at Upperby Church every Sunday, handing out Mento mints.

“Everybody got a mint when he walked into church” Sandra said.

“He’s got me addicted to them now. My car’s full of Mentos.”

Sandra said that Grant refused to bow down to his cancer.

“He was a fighter,” she said.

“When he finished his chemo, he asked for another six goes.

“The doctor said he’d never had anyone asking for more chemo before.

“He was so brave up to the end,” said Sandra.

Sandra was extremely grateful to friend Tracey for hosting the charity night at her club.

“I couldn’t thank her more from the bottom of my heart,” Sandra said.

For Tracey, who often holds fundraising events at the Railway Club, the evening for Grant was more personal than other recent fundraising efforts.

“I grew up with the family all of my life,” Tracey said.

Tracey and Sandra now plan to make the night an annual event.

Sam Johnston, community and events fundraiser for Eden Valley Hospice, praised Sandra and Tracey for their efforts.

“Everyone at Eden Valley Hospice is so grateful for the continued support from Sandra and Tracey,” Sam said.

“Each year the Hospice has to raise over £3 million from the local community so fundraising events like theirs are vital for us.”
