Biblical yoga sessions which started in Workington are being rolled out in care homes across the country.

Residents at Amathea Care Home, in Newlands Lane, have enjoyed the quirky activity for more than a year, using breathing techniques, prayers, hymns, meditation and reflection.

They act out a Bible story being read to them with gentle movements to keep them mobile and stimulate them mentally, with residents having commented that they feel happier and more relaxed after taking part.

The sessions are the brainchild of Yvonne Myers, the home's Chaplain, and have clinched her an 'Oscar' at an awards ceremony held by MHA, which runs the home.

The activity has proved so successful that it is now being rolled out across all of the company's homes.

Home manager Tony Lyons said: “We are extremely proud of Yvonne and she richly deserves this recognition.

"Yvonne developed the programme herself out of her chaplaincy work with the residents.

"We have seen a noticeable improvement in resident’s mobility and well-being.”

Yvonne has worked as a Chaplain for MHA for eight years and also helped set up the yoga sessions at Woodlands in Penrith.
