A FILM created by the late Nick Pemberton will kick off a festival which aims to become a staple in Cumbria's arts calendar.

Film Fling, which held a successful film festival in Carlisle in May last year, is returning this weekend.

Organisers are aiming to engage with local filmmakers and engage with anyone and everyone who has an interest and a passion for film.

Tullie House is hosting the event which gets underway tomorrow evening with a screening of This Place, a documentary created by Nick Pemberton and his good friend Phil Hewitson, who is one of the festival organisers.

The 75-minute documentary will be a fitting tribute to the 71-year-old who was a hugely influential figure on the city’s artistic and cultural landscape and a founding member of Film Fling.

Phil is hoping this year's event will be the starting point for something bigger to come and says organisers are looking to get support from the British Film Institute (BFI) to expand the event for March 2019.

He said: "It began in 2017 we are now looking to do a smallish event to engage with as many local film makers as possible.

"I feel it would be a good opportunity to meet different people working in the film world and hopefully build up contacts for future collaborations.

"We are also looking at doing other screening events across the year to engage with community groups, and try and broaden the audience here in Carlisle and across Cumbria."

Short films will be showcased at a second event on Sunday afternoon between 1pm and 4pm, which will also include a talk about their production.

It will be followed by a double bill screening of Definitive Therapy and The Maniac Project, between 6.45pm and 10pm.

"Both are feature length films made in Cumbria, for very little money. The fact that they got made is quite extraordinary," said Phil.

"I think it shows there is talent in Cumbria and despite not having huge budgets ideas and storytelling is very much thriving here."

This Place will be shown at 7pm tomorrow and will be followed by a Q&A, poetry and songs. All event are free to attend.
