THE names of Longtown's fallen soldiers were read out as more than 100 people gathered to remember them and thousands more.

The service at the town's war memorial on Sunday was led by Melvyn Redgers, a reader in the Esk Parishes, and Methodist minister Rachel Williams.

The Last Post rang out and the crowd bowed their heads in silence.

Nigel Williamson read the roll of honour and representatives from the town laid wreaths at the base of the memorial.

Among them were Longtown Rainbows and Brownies, county and city councillors Val Tarbitt and Ray Bloxham, the head of MOD Longtown, Longtown Army Cadets and Joe Kirkup of Longtown Fire Service.

The Royal British Legion, Arthuret parish council, First Responders, Longtown Women's Institute, Arthuret Parochial Church Council and the community centre also laid a tribute.

A parish council spokeswoman said: "We thank the community centre manager and staff, and all who took part. We also thank Paul Brown, who kindly paid to have the railings at the war memorial repaired and cleaned, and Keith Morris who helped him clean the memorial before the service."
