A memorial dedicated to 17 former pupils of Broughton Primary School that died in the First World War was unveiled at the school on Sunday.

Over a hundred villagers turned out for a ceremony led by head Karen Shankland and Reverend Godfrey Butland. All 17 soldiers' names were read out, in addition to Roland Dalton, who lived in Great Broughton and lost his life through injuries he received at the Battle of the Somme.

Laying of wreathes was carried out by Broughton Primary School head boy Eliot Smith and head girl Faye Lewthwaite.

The tribute bears the names of soldiers Jack Adams; Thomas William Bedlington; Joseph William Cavanagh; John Irving; John Philip Lister; Issac Ostle; Joseph Pickering; Tom Stephenson Robinson; Harry Robinson; John Routledge; Edward Gilbert Speight; Harry Smith; William Shaw; James Stephenson; John Sloan; David Clark Thompson and James Graham Wilkinson.

Five of the men had started school in the same year together.

Ray Dobie was thanked for being instrumental in establishing the memorial. Mr Dobie was not able to attend the unveiling as he had been invited to attend the Remembrance Day service at Westminster Abbey.

Mrs Shankland also thanked Broughton Parish Council, Broughton Legion, Cumbria Community Foundation through the United Utilities Legacy Fund and the community for contributions for the memorial fund, which totalled £2,060. Suggestions are welcomed as to how to honour the fallen with the remainder from the fund of £700.
