Whether it’s chicken, beef, pork or lamb, most of us love a traditional Sunday roast.

In Cumbria, we’re blessed with a number of top pubs and restaurants to serve up the popular dish.

Several of them have won awards and are among the most popular places to spend a Sunday afternoon.

We’ve asked readers on our social media channels to nominate their favourite place in north and west Cumbria and tell us why their meals are so good.

From the views of respondents, we’ve compiled the best places in the county, in no particular order, to check out.

1: THE SHEPHERDS INN & AUCTIONEER, CARLISLE

The eatery, located on the Rosehill Estate, won lots of praise for having ‘the best beef around’.

Paula Jayne Brown posted: “Always fantastic food and outstanding service.”

Dawn Anderson said: “[It] has to be the Auctioneer. Had the roast beef today. Was delicious.”

Gareth Lancaster added: “Auctioneer Carlisle. No contest! Puddings are good as well.”

2: THE KELLBANK, GOSFORTH, SEASCALE

The carvery at this Lake District hotel, has been hailed as awesome by one reader.

Andrew Lachlan Beattie posted: “The Kellbank by a country mile. Paul O’Halloran is the man. Best chef in the county. The roast beef is always crumbly, the yorkies are massive, [and] roast potatoes never over cooked.”

Richard Mawson said: “The Kellbank carvery is awesome! Three meats cooked to perfection and amazing veg. Kids’ entertainer every week and outdoor play park..”

3: THE MILBOURNE ARMS, CARLISLE

The pub, on Milbourne Street, was praised by reader Gary Murray as the place to find ‘simply the best Sunday roast around Cumbria’.

Gareth McArdle said: “The Milbourne Arms Carlisle, by far the best.”

Lynsey Gibbs posted: “We travel from Northumberland on a regular basis to Carlisle, and whenever we stay over we just have a Sunday roast from the Milbourne Arms.

“The portion is generous, the price is right buy the food is amazing. Home cooked, the way it should be.”

Penny Harrison said: “The Milbourne arms has the best Sunday roast, the family and I often go,the staff are very friendly and the pub has a lovely family feel to it.”

4: THE LIFEBOAT INN, MARYPORT

The Senhouse Street pub was named by several readers for its food.

Paul Mandale, Ellen Richardson and Camellia Winn-Murdoch recommended eating there.

Ashleigh George posted: “[The] carvery is out of this world.”

Hilary Messenger added: “The Sunday carvery is delish.”

Jonny Johnston rated the carvery five stars.

5: THE OLD BANK CITY PUB AND CHOP HOUSE, CARLISLE

The gastropub, on Fisher Street, was recommended by Matthew Graeme Aitchison, Matt Rayson, Emily Aitchison, Beth Francis and Laura Aitchison.

Hannah Jane Cundall posted: “The Old Bank City Pub and Chop House, best restaurant in Carlisle.”
