A prominent Penrith hotel has been sold.

Lake District Hotels Limited put the George Hotel on the market with a guide price of £2.75m and it has been sold for an undisclosed sum.

Joint commercial property agents Colliers International and Knight Frank completed the sale.

The 35-bedroom hotel occupies a prominent position in the centre of the town.

The three-star hotel has been sold to Everbright Group.

The George is the fourth group hotel and second in Cumbria after the acquisition and full refurbishment of Stonecross Manor Hotel in Kendal last year.

In a joint statement, Julian Troup, of Colliers International, and Kit Abram, of Knight Frank, said: “We are delighted to have completed the sale of the George Hotel to buyers who will continue to maintain the character and heritage of this attractive period property.

“The sale to a buyer with overseas connections is further evidence of rising international interest in acquiring UK hotels largely thanks to devaluation of the pound.”

Lake District Hotels Limited owns the Lodore Falls at Derwentwater, Inn on the Lake at Ullswater, Borrowdale Hotel and Keswick’s Inn on the Square, Skiddaw Hotel and Kings Arms.

The 300-year-old Grade I listed building was last for sale in 1998 with a price tag of £1.1 million and was bought the following year by Lake District Hotels.

Parts of it date back to the 18th century and it has 35 en suite rooms.
