A WIGTON social club has had its licence suspended following an alleged incident there on Saturday night.

Cumbria Police conducted an emergency review of West Street Social Club's liquor licence and today a hearing of Allerdale Council's licensing committee resulted in a 28-day suspension.

The force states that the suspension has been put in place pending a full review.

A statement released by Cumbria Constabulary late this afternoon says that police will, over the course of the next 28 days, submit a full file of evidence with a view to either putting in place stringent conditions with the aim of making sure the venue can be run safely in future or revoking the licence permanently.

Sergeant Mitchell Franks, of the force's West Cumbria Licensing unit, said: “Licensed premises should be safe environments for people to socialise responsibly.

“If a licensee cannot ensure the safety of patrons then police will use all necessary legislation to force them to do so or seek to close the premises.”
