CAN you be one of Santa's little helpers this year? Organisers of Carlisle's popular Santa Dash are appealing for firms to step in to help raise vital funds for Cumbria's children's hospice.

Individuals who sign up to take part in the 5k and family-friendly 2k dashes are also being asked to collect sponsorship for their efforts - furthering boosting the total figure raised for Jigsaw.

It comes as fresh figures from hospice leaders reveal that the first two years of Carlisle Santa Dash, run in its current form, have raised more than £17,000.

The funds help run vital services for the young children across Cumbria who have terminal illnesses or life-limiting conditions and their families who rely on the support of Jigsaw.

Around £4,000 is needed to cover the cost of Santa suits and medals that will be issued to all those who sign up to take part in Carlisle Santa Dash, which is taking place on Sunday, December 9.

Business sponsorship for the event will allow runners' entry fees to be given to the charity.

The Santa Dash is organised by members of DH Runners, Carlisle Tri-Club and Sport in Action, who all give their time and effort free of charge for the event.

Claire Allen, from Sport in Action, said: "The Eden Valley Hospice has let us know that the grand total raised over the first two years was £17,237, which is more than we originally thought.

"This year we'd like participants to try and get sponsored for completing the event if they can as this might boost the total funds, as we aim raise more each year.

"We'd also love more groups to get involved including schools, employers and employees."

Volunteers are also sought to be marshals around the course, which starts in Bitts Park and ends in the city centre outside the Old Town Hall.
