A COMMUNITY is rallying round to save its cancelled fireworks display.
The News & Star revealed that the popular Dalston bonfire event, which attracted an all-time record of 2,500 people last year, had been scrapped for 2018.
Dalston Recreation Association, the event's organisers, blamed a "claims culture" following a number of insurance claims made against them.
But Carlisle resident Darren Bell has refused to accept defeat, and has started an online crowdfunding effort to save the show.
"As long as I can remember I have been going to the fireworks show in Dalston," said Darren, 47.
"Dalston has been a big part of my life; both of my daughters went to school there.
"It's a pretty unique village with a vibrant village life."
Darren thinks it is important to Dalston that the annual November 5 event is revived.
"Every community used to have its own fireworks display. Even each area of Carlisle would have one," Darren recalled.
"I'd hate to think this is the start of the decline of Dalston's community. I wouldn't want to see the village traditions die out."
Ben Hodgson, who runs Ben Hodgson Cars in Dalston, was among the first to donate to Darren's fundraising efforts.
"I've been here since 2002, and every year I'd go to the fireworks show," Ben said.
"We're only a small business, but we wanted to do everything we can to help."
