More details have been revealed about a world record attempt to coincide with the launch of the new plastic £5 bank note.

Last week Wigton-based Innovia opened its brand new multi-million facility which will manufacture the polymer for the Bank of England's £10 note, due to follow next year.

The £5 note, featuring Sir Winston Churchill, is also printed on Innovia's Guardian polymer, albeit manufactured in Australia.

To celebrate the town's piece of history the North Allerdale Development Trust (NADT) charity have organised a world record attempt to create the biggest ever human pound symbol.

The event, on October 11, will see months of hard work from a team of volunteers come to fruition - and organisers hope that about 2,000 people will take part.

Youngsters from schools including St Cuthberts, Wigton Infant School, Thomlinson Junior School and Nelson Thomlinson School will all be participating and it is hoped they will be joined by members of the public.

The attempt has been greeted with much anticipation in town since the idea was announced in The Cumberland News earlier this month, with thousands of people engaging with posts on social media.

NADT have announced that there will be free parking on Water Street car park on the day thanks to an agreement with Allerdale Council.

A free shuttle service for people from the car park to the venue - the Showfields, off West Road - will be provided by the Wigton and District Community Bus.

There will be no parking at the Showfields.

The event will begin from 10am and will be overseen by an adjudicator from Guinness World Records.

Disposable ponchos will be provided for people to wear on the day as one of the requirements for the attempt is the image must be one block of colour.

The attempt will be filmed and relayed live to a big screen.

Mark Robershaw, chief executive at Innovia, said: “We are delighted to be part of this record-breaking attempt in Wigton, the place we are proud to call the global headquarters of the Innovia Group.

"Our staff are eager to engage and participate in shaping the largest human currency symbol and make the best of this community event.”
