The site of a former petrol station could be turned into a Spar shop.

James Hall and Company Ltd has applied to Allerdale council to turn the former JR Graham filling station on the corner of Harrington Road and Douglas Road in Workington into a convenience store.

The planning application says the proposal would create 15 full-time and 15 part-time jobs and the shop would open daily from 6am to 11pm. Two single-storey buildings on the site would be demolished.

The site has previously been a petrol station, car sales business and car wash but closed in 2009. It was put up for sale in 2012 by owner Peter Graham, whose grandfather John started the business.

The planned development would include 24 car parking spaces, two motorcycle spaces, two bicycle spaces and a cash machine.

A new access would be created from Harrington Road. James Hall and Company Ltd is a wholesaler and distributor for Spar, which has more than 2,400 shops in the UK.

Mr Graham and Spar were unavailable for comment.
