Comedy legend Johnny Vegas had fans in stitches at an event to launch his new BBC comedy Home from Home.

Dozens of fans made the trip to the Rheged Centre in Penrith earlier today, to get a glimpse of their comedy hero.

He was joined by other members of the cast, such as Adam James (plays Robert Dillon) and Niky Wardley (plays Fiona Hackett).

The new comedy was filmed at Pooley Bridge in Ulswater and sees two families collide when they find out they are neighbours on a holiday park.

Neil Hackett (played by Johnny Vegas) and his wife Fiona Hackett (played by Niky Wardley) fulfil their lifelong dream of buying a lodge in the Lake District.

Niky Wardley said: "The programme is about two different families, us (the Hacketts) and the Dillons, who find themselves neighbours on a holiday park.

"We probably wouldn't in any other walk of life be neighbours. So it's two very different families, two very different financial set-ups colliding."

Johnny Vegas added: "Oddly enough it's two partners who don't get on who would ordinarily get on, if it wasn't for your husband (addressing Niky) being an idiot and the wife being a snob.

"I'm the idiot on our side and the wife on our neighbour's side Penny Dillon (played by Emilia Fox), has utter disdain for us."

Fans from across the county made the trip to meet the cast, Alison Hunter of Penrith was joined by four friends.

She said: "I heard about it before when he was filming it. Everyone knew he was filming, so we thought we'd come down and have a laugh."

Vegas had a joke with fans and also posed for photographs, before the screening of the comedy.

On working with Johnny Vegas, co-star Adam James (who plays Robert Dillon) said: "To work with Johnny Vegas is a dream come true, they say never meet your heroes, but he didn't disappoint at all.

"It's been a joy. I have always found him gloriously anarchic. You see him on all these panel shows behaving brilliantly and badly and he's wonderful.

"I mean you can hear him now." He jokes.

"He's wonderfully irreverent, but as a person, as a fellow human being and actor he is gorgeous.

"He is so kind and considerate and a joy to work with, I've been really lucky."

One girl made the trip from Cotehill in Carlisle to get her name out there in the television industry.

Aiming to study Media at Carlisle College, 16-year-old Alex Carruthers wants a future in production and directing.

She said: "I want to get into the business, I want to get my name out there.

"And who doesn't want to meet Johnny Vegas!"

Home from Home will air on BBC One next month.
