HERE'S a round-up of some of the biggest court cases to have taken place in Carlisle and West Cumbria this week. 

Workington man with indecent child images was abused as a child

Philip Martin-White admitted the following charges:

  • Distributing an indecent child image classified as Category A (the most serious kind) on November 4, 2021.
  • Downloading 2,605 Category A child abuse images on or before March 17, 2022, at Workington.
  • Downloading 2,143 Category B indecent child images during the same time period.
  • Downloading 283 Category C indecent child images during the same time period.
  • And possessing an extreme pornographic image, depicting sexual activity between a person and a dog.

Workington man stole £27,000 in cash from his gran

Kevin Teasdale, 38, entered his guilty plea to the offence when he appeared before a judge at Carlisle Crown Court. The charge states that he committed the offence on April 4 in Workington.

Carlisle sex offender struggling with 'impulse control' jailed again

The two offences committed by 51-year-old Frederick O’Brien, who pleaded guilty to both charges, came to light after police visited him at the city centre accommodation where he was living on April 2, the city’s crown court heard.

He admitted installing, deleting, and then reinstalling the Grindr dating app on his phone. He deleted three apps from his phone – activity that is forbidden under the terms of his sexual harm prevention order.

Carlisle man denies helping alleged murderer to dispose of a car

Marcus Goodfellow, 20, entered his not guilty plea to the charge when he appeared at the city’s crown court. The allegation is that he “assisted” the man accused of murdering Annan man Paul Taylor 

Police check in Carlisle led to capture of 'deported' Albanian man

Dilaver Golemi, 31, was a passenger in a car that was pulled over by the police in Carlisle on May 1, the city’s Rickergate court heard.

He has now pleaded guilty to breaching a deportation order made in March 2020.

Workington man subjected ex-wife to terrifying prolonged assault

 “He has then grabbed hold of the victim’s neck and thrown her on to the floor in the kitchen. While on the ground, the defendant has got on top of the victim and was grabbing hold of her neck with his right hand, and holding his body up with his left.

“The victim was continuously telling the defendant ‘get off me’ but ultimately pushed him with both her palms to his forehead, causing him to fall backwards.”

Pervert who abducted 12-year-old to abuse him jailed

Former Lancashire man William, who had moved to Carlisle, admitted kidnap, sexual assault, committing an offence with intent to commit a sexual offence, and breaching a sexual harm prevention order.

Jury finds Workington pensioner did sexually abuse two children

 A Carlisle Crown Court jury concluded Philip Alfred Callow did commit the acts alleged:

  • A sexual assault on a girl aged under 13.
  • Two charges of inciting the same girl to engage in sexual activity.
  • Engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child.
  • Causing a child under 13 to look at an image of sexual activity.
  • And a further sexual offence against a different child.

Stalker lied about age and pretended to be police to get phone number

Jason Hubberstey, 52, a married man, repeatedly lied to the woman during their two-year relationship, and claimed to be nearly 20 years younger than his actual age.

When his ‘tortured’ victim, from Workington, blocked him and changed her phone number, the defendant contacted her father, pretending to be police to get her number.

Carlisle drugs criminal caught after he stayed with pal who overdosed

Repeat offender Dean Kerr, 36, who has 128 offences on his criminal record, called for an ambulance and stayed with Stacey Sullivan after she collapsed.

She died in hospital later the same day.

At Carlisle Crown Court, Kerr denied that at the time he was concerned in the supply of both cocaine and heroin. But after hearing evidence, a jury convicted him of the cocaine offence only.

Man found guilty of making indecent images of children in Whitehaven

Lawrence Wilson, 36, was found guilty to the following offences:

  • Making 22 Category A indecent images of a child (the most serious category of child abuse images)
  • Making 56 Category C indecent images of a child

Man banned from contacting woman following 'acid throw threat'

An Eden Valley man has been banned from contacting a vulnerable woman amid alleged reports of domestic violence which include a chilling threat to throw acid at her.

Carlisle worker told he may die after colleague's white spirit 'prank'

The colleague responsible for the 'prank' was Kai Campbell, who was aged 19 at the time of the incident in April 2022. He admitted administering a poison with intent to injure, aggrieve, or annoy.
