Winter advice for chesty people

HEALTH officials are giving people with breathing problems advice as the cold weather returns.

Breathlessness, coughing and excess phlegm are among the symptoms of lung conditions which can get worse in winter and leave people vulnerable to serious chest infections.

NHS Cumbria’s community respiratory teams based in South Lakeland and West Cumbria are keen to remind people with respiratory conditions how important it is to look after themselves.

Both teams treat people with respiratory conditions out in the community.

They offer support, rehabilitation and also help to educate patients on how best to manage their condition, while helping to keep them out of hospital.

Jenny Till, a specialist respiratory nurse for NHS Cumbria working in the South Lakes area, said: “Cold weather can make lung conditions worse and is the most common reason people with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) are admitted to hospital.

“Hospital admissions and periods of illness often result in a loss of strength and fitness, further hampering people’s quality of life.

“If you suffer from a lung condition, then please pay attention to our tips and look after yourself.

“However, if you have a lung condition and you’re worried about your health, then contact your GP surgery.”

Tips to avoid breathlessness this winter: stay active, use simple home exercises; get the recommended vaccines including the seasonal flu vaccine, the anti-pneumococcal vaccine and the swine flu vaccine; keep warm, colder weather can make symptoms worse.

Watch the weather forecast and avoid going out when it’s too cold; aim to keep your thermostat at around 21°C during the day and 18°C at night; use breathing techniques; breathlessness, especially on exertion, can be frightening.

To regain control of your breathing more quickly, try sitting while leaning your elbows on your knees, leaning your back against a wall or even leaning your arms on a ledge or wall when standing.
