Askam hooker Sam Dowsett is the latest leading amateur to join Workington Town for 2017.

Town have swooped to make a second signing from the amateur ranks in the south of the county, following on from the capture of Barrow Island’s Perry Singleton.

And Workington boss Dave Clark says Dowsett has really impressed him with his attitude and desire for the game.

“We want to sign the best talent from the amateur ranks,” said Clark.

“Equally as important as the talent is the player’s attitude and desire. Sam has both in abundance. His game management is excellent, he is strong in defence and he can kick. He wants to progress in the game and we want to help him do that.

“He’s impressed me greatly so far and I look forward to working with him.”

Prolific points scorer Dowsett, 24, started his open age career with Askam and has represented Cumbria at every level as well as touring with BARLA Great Britain Under-19s in 2011. And he has not only stood out in this country but he also shone while living Down Under.

Dowsett moved to Australia in 2013 where he picked up the player of the year award for Cooma in New South Wales and was also joint player of the year for Darwin NT.

He moved back to Cumbria this year and has already been nominated for the National Conference League Division Two Player of the Year at the NCL awards next week in Leeds.

Dowsett said: “I’ve always set myself sporting goals and my goal has always been to test myself in the professional game.

“I sat down with Dave Clark and knew that the things he and the board were putting in place at Town would allow me to do make that progression.”

He was also keen to thank everyone who had helped him during his time in the amateur ranks.

He added: “I’d like to put on record my sincere thanks to all at my fantastic club Askam who have supported me throughout my playing career.”
