Workington Town have secured a second high-profile friendly before the start of the season.

They will take on Super League side Huddersfield Giants at the John Smiths Stadium on Saturday, January 28, kick-off 3pm.

This will be Workington's third pre-season encounter before their begin their League One campaign.

Coach Dave Clark is keen to use the games to get a good look at his new squad and some of the amateurs who have been training with them.

He said: "We’re still in the process of finalising the squad and three friendlies will enable us to look at all of the squad members, including the younger development players."

And Huddersfield managing director Richard Thewlis echoed his views, saying they were happy to accommodate Town into their pre-season schedule.

He added: "We are fortunate that the friendship between Dave Clark and our own Rick Stone has enabled both clubs to work the friendly into our schedules.

"We look forward to welcoming Town as we finalise our preparations for the Super League season ahead."

Huddersfield boast a host of top class players in their ranks, including Scotland international skipper Danny Brough, who played alongside Town's Brett and Callum Phillips in last year's Four Nations.

Giants head coach Rick Stone said: "We’ll have to see what next week brings that affects our planned preparation but whatever the outcome we will host Workington and whether I go with my top 20 or use more of the younger lads, I simply don’t know at this stage.

"It is however a good fixture for us to have and I’m told that our undersoil heating will guarantee a game which is good and we’ll work out how best to approach it nearer the time."

The Huddersfield clash follows on from Town's opening friendly next Saturday at Derwent Park when they welcome Widnes Under-19s.
